Graduate R&D Chemist

This is a hands-on role supporting the development and application of electrochemical technologies for environmental and industrial applications. You’ll contribute directly to customer trials, lab experimentation, and product development - playing a key part in turning cutting-edge science into practical solutions.
This role would suit a recently qualified graduate chemist/chemical engineer who is wanting a practical focus to their role coupled with hands-on lab experience.
Graduate R&D Chemist responsibilities:
- Design and conduct lab-based experiments and cleaning trials with precise data recording and analysis.
- Operate pilot-scale electrochemical generators and test rigs to produce materials for trials.
- Support field-based customer trials, including equipment preparation, transport, operation at customer sites, and post-trial cleaning.
- Collect and transcribe trial data into structured databases to support analysis and reporting.
- Manage laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, stock control, waste disposal, and adherence to safety standards.
- Draft and maintain documentation including SOPs, COSHH assessments, and risk assessments.
- Assist the engineering team with prototype construction and system testing.
- Monitor and calibrate test equipment such as pumps, sensors, and pipework.
- Liaise with partners and internal teams to support the delivery of key projects.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and efficient working environment in line with health and safety protocols.
Graduate R&D Chemist Qualifications:
- Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or closely related.
- Some experience working in a commercial lab setting is desired but not essential.
- Confident using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data analysis and reporting.
- Familiarity with chemical handling, safety documentation (e.g. COSHH), and health & safety best practices.
- Self-motivated and eager to develop technical skills and industry knowledge.
- Comfortable working flexibly, including occasional unsociable hours or weekends.
- Willing to travel across the UK for customer trials, with potential for occasional international work.
