Are you ready to shape the future of health and safety within a critical and fast-moving hazardous materials environment?
We are working exclusively with a well-established, UK-wide fuels and distribution organisation seeking a forward-thinking Health & Safety Manager to build and lead a national health and safety function. This is a rare opportunity to create a best-in-class H&S framework from the ground up—without inheriting legacy systems or managing a team.
This role offers full autonomy to design and implement a modern, scalable safety strategy across a national depot network, supporting safe and compliant operations throughout the UK.
The Opportunity
Reporting at senior level, the successful candidate will take full ownership of the organisation’s health and safety strategy, culture and systems across approximately 35 operational depots nationwide.
This is a blank-canvas role suited to a confident and self-sufficient SHEQ professional who thrives on building frameworks, influencing stakeholders and embedding a proactive safety culture within hazardous materials operations.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement a national health and safety strategy aligned to hazardous materials and fuels distribution operations
Develop and embed policies, procedures, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and compliance frameworks from first principles
Lead risk assessments, incident investigations and root cause analysis
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across multiple operational sites
Provide expert guidance and coaching to operational leaders and frontline colleagues
Ensure full compliance with UK health and safety legislation and industry-specific standards
Oversee audit programmes, performance reporting and trend analysis
Act as the organisation’s subject matter expert on all health and safety matters
Promote and embed a positive, values-led safety culture across the business
Candidate Profile
Proven experience in a senior Health & Safety role within a high-risk environment
Experience within fuels, chemicals, logistics or other hazardous materials sectors is highly desirable
Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements
NEBOSH Diploma (advantageous)
Demonstrable experience building or transforming H&S systems
Confident communicator with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
Pragmatic, hands-on approach with the ability to work autonomously
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally
What’s on Offer
£50,000–£60,000 salary
Company car or car allowance
33 days’ holiday, including bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave
Company pension and life assurance
Healthcare cash plan
Employee assistance programme
Cycle to work scheme
Long service recognition
Funded training and accredited development opportunities
Access to retail, leisure and lifestyle discounts
Clear progression opportunities within a wider multi-division group
Why Apply?
This is a genuinely unique opportunity to architect a national health and safety function within a growing hazardous materials business. The successful candidate will have the autonomy, senior-level exposure and strategic influence to make a measurable impact from day one.
If you are motivated by building systems, shaping culture and operating at both strategic and operational levels, we would welcome a confidential discussion.
